Banan SBA Winners

District Director's Message

One of my favorite tasks every year is the selection of the annual SBA Small Business Awards. With the help of a dozen dedicated judges and hard-working SBA team members, we’re wrapping up the 2020 selectees and preparing to name more than 25 outstanding winners.
It takes an extended team effort to solicit nominations from busy small business owners, work with bankers who know their customers well, and then weed through the data to screen, evaluate, and process scores. As we pour over the stories, I am always inspired – and often awestruck- at the determination, creativity, and perseverance of so many small businesses in Hawaii.
We learn the history of family-owned businesses that have survived for over 100 years despite economic upheavals, natural disasters, and the losses of crucial family leaders. The backgrounds of business owners that bubble with humor and humility as they struggle to overcome adversities with support and insight from mentors and colleagues and the “school of hard knocks.” Among the common threads woven into these stories is that these individuals are always looking for ways to work smarter, to identify new opportunities that build better businesses, and how they make that happen. Often with SBA support.
SBA can help your business do the same. In 2020, we’re putting resources into entrepreneurial education with more training on financing and contracting readiness. We’re focusing on emerging businesses, exporting, and innovation.
