Director’s Corner

NFDO District Director J. Malcolm Richards

As we look back over 2021, it has truly been an extraordinary year full of the unexpected. In reflecting on these last several months, what we at the SBA have seen is that small businesses are resilient, determined, and resourceful.  To overcome the barriers imposed by Covid-19, many have adapted and pivoted by implementing new strategies.  We applauded this resiliency with our National Small Business Week activities in September 2021.

I am proud of our role in the recovery of small firms across the nation and in North Florida in particular.  Our final COVID funding program, the COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) will sunset on 12/31/2021 however, there is still time for those that wish to apply,  More information can be found at www.sba.gov/eidl.  While the Covid-19 funding programs have wound down, our regular guaranteed lending programs hit an all-time high with almost $1B in approved loans. The lending stats are below, and this equates to a 42% increase in number of loans and a 62% increase in loan dollars versus our FY2020 numbers.  This is a strong indicator that our economy is on the road to recovery from the pandemic.

Additionally, we developed new strategic alliances with organizations that support entrepreneurs and small businesses. We signed agreements with the African American Entrepreneurs Association and First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.  We also entered into a statewide agreement with the SBA South Florida District and the Florida Association of Veteran Owned Businesses.    We also partnered with federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Census Bureau to provide new types of educational webinars for our small business community.

On November 27th, we celebrated Small Business Saturday which promotes shopping and dining small to support small businesses and the communities they support with vital jobs and services.  As we enter 2022 and you reflect on the past and think big about the future, I encourage you to continue to #ShopSmall and #DineSmall.  Meanwhile, we will be focused on refining our outreach to bring you relevant, useful, and impactful content to help you succeed in business.  I am inspired and excited about what is on the horizon in the coming year and hope you are, too.

I wish you all Happy Holidays and Blessings for the New Year.
