 Each year the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) celebrates, connects, and empowers service members during National Veterans Small Business Week (#NVSBW). 2019 marks the sixth annual NVSBW! Join the Dallas/Fort Worth District Office, resource partners, and other organizations as we celebrate the veteran-and military-owned small business community. This year’s theme is Mission #VetBiz Success, where we will highlight the tools and resources used to help veterans on their journey to small business success. Whether you’re just starting your business or expanding into new locations, SBA is here to support you throughout your mission.

Day 1 - Monday, November 4


Transition Assistance

Transitioning service members return home to civilian life and may choose to continue to serve their country by becoming small business owners.

Through their military training, they have learned perseverance, adaptability, and determination—key qualities found among business owners too. They have also learned that successful missions do not happen alone. For transitioning service members looking to start their #VetBiz mission, they can seek assistance by visiting a local Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) or attending a Boots to Business training course which helps them tap into these transferable skills as they transition from service to startup.

In summer 2019, Boots to Business reached more than 100,000 participants since the program's inception in 2013 and continues to grow to support active and transitioning service members and their spouses.

Day 2 - Tuesday, November 5


FREE Entrepreneurial Workshop

SBA and its resource partners empower veterans, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses with entrepreneurial training, tools, and resources. With customized curriculums, in-person classes, and online courses, veterans have a variety of training opportunities to utilize at any stage of their #VetBiz mission—whether they’re starting, growing, or expanding their business. Bring your lunch and come join Bridget Moon, Economic Development Specialist and Veterans Business Development Officer at Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce to learn about SBA programs and resource partners.

SBA and Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center (VWEC)

Every business starts with a dream. Turning this dream into a reality requires confidence, grit, knowledge, and funding. Wherever you are in growing your business, the SBA has your back. Come join Bridget Moon, Economic Development Specialist and Veteran Business Development Officer, with the US SBA Dallas/Fort Worth District Office to learn about SBA programs and resources available.

Also, speaking Abby Malchow, Senior Program Manager, Global Military Affairs. Amazon Military Affairs launched MEP in 2019 to further empower military veteran and spouse entrepreneurs to effectively leveraging Amazon’s diverse resources.

In this session, Abby will discuss the key components of selling successfully on Amazon, various entrepreneurial opportunities available at Amazon, plus the unique ways Amazon is thinking big on behalf of the military community.

Stakeholders and Resources

Serving nearly 2.5 million veteran small businesses on their mission to #VetBiz success can’t be done alone. The SBA relies on its extensive network of resource partners to provide service members, veterans, and military spouses with the tools they need to succeed. From mentorship to referrals, SBA’s partner network works nationwide to ensure veterans are set up for success on their entrepreneurship mission.

The U.S. government is the largest customer in the world. It buys all types of products and services — in both large and small quantities — and it’s required by law to consider buying from small businesses. There are several different ways of contracting that can help you win awards from the federal government. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) works with federal agencies in order to award 23 percent of prime government contract dollars to eligible small businesses.

Business Beyond the Battlefield Conference (BBBC19) November 6-9th, brings together military spouses and veteran entrepreneurs, small business owners, subject matter experts and a myriad of entrepreneurial resources to increase awareness, facilitate access and inspire action focused on growing the economy and improving lives through military connected business ownership.

Chris Pilkerton serves as the Acting Administrator and General Counsel of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Boots to Business Reboot
For Veterans & Spouses

#NVSBW19 Veterans have the character, discipline and skills needed to succeed as small business owners and entrepreneurs. Wondering what it takes and how you can prepare? Enroll in Boots to Business Reboot.

Boots to Business Reboot is a FREE two-step training program that provides participants an overview of business ownership as a career vocation, an outline and knowledge on the components of a business plan, a practical exercise in opportunity recognition, and an introduction to available public and private sector resources. Step one is the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course eligible to Veterans of all eras, service members (including members of the National Guard and Reserve) and their spouses. This course is instructed by SBA and its partners, who are skilled business advisors.

Step two is one of the online follow-on courses instructed by a consortium of professors and skilled business advisors from the SBA Network. If you’ve already attended an in-person Boots to Business or Reboot class, visit https://sbavets.force.com/s/ to sign up for one of the online B2B follow-on courses.
